Term Definition
Shogun (Title) Most important person in Japanese government, except for the Emperor. This person ruled FOR the emperor.
Clovis King of the Francs, converted to christianity and laid foundation for the Carolingian Empire
Personal Rule The rule of an individual, determined by the individual's abilities. Very strong, but does not last more than a generation.
Louis the Pious Charlemagne's son. Had no skills whatsoever. His own sons rebelled against him.
Diocletian Divided the Roman Empire into two pieces; Western Roman Empire became Byzantine Empire.
Procopius Wrote two histories of Byzantine Emperor Justinian's rule. One good and sponsored by Justinian, one bad and secret.
Richard the Lionhearted Led the third crusade for England, not very secular, more militant.
Yaroslav the Wise Divided Kiev among his three sons, which led to the downfall of Kiev at the hands of the Mongols.
Ivan the Third After living unger Mongol rule for generations, this person refused to pay tribute to the Mongols, ending the Mongol reign.
Belassarius General of Justinian, reconquered much of Africa, slaughtered rebels in the Nika rebellion.
Justinian Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, greatly improved Byzantine Empire's defenses, militant, had his own "Code", a law system.
Tang Taizong Had an advisor who's only job was to criticize him and point out his errors. An emperor of the Tang dynasty.
Sui A Chinese Dynasty, built the Grand Canal, unified China.
Tang A Chinese Dynasty, peasants rebelled against it dynasty ended from famine.
Song A Chinese Dynasty, very populous because of the advent of rice.
Qin A Chinse Dynasty, built the Great Wall of China.
Kublai Khan Genghis Khan's grandson, started Yuan dynasty in China
Shotoku Japanese Prince, sent three missions into China to bring back Chinese culture.
Mandate of Heaven If a Chinese Dynasty had this, then the gods themselves supported the dynasty When they lost this, a new dynasty took over.
Marco Polo A traveler from Europe, wrote about Kublai Khan.
Genghis Khan Unified the Mongolian tribes, then went on a rampage, conquering as he went.
Shintoism Traditional Japanese religion.
