Term Definition
Louisbourg New Englanders captured the important fort in this city, located on Cape Breton Island in response to the raiding of New York and Maine by the French.
Ohio River valley Some land companies wanted to explore opportunities in the valley, but the French, who traded in that are, thought they claimed it, so they would not allow the British in it. In the 1740s, British fur traders went into the Ohio country and built a fort deep in the territory of the Miami people in a place called Pickawillany. The French then drove them out and built a string of forts along the rivers of the upper Ohio country, closer to the British than ever.
Iroquois Confederacy This was the most powerful group of Native Americans in the East. based in New York. When it was first formed in about 1570, it contained 5 groups - the Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Oneida, with other groups joined or being conquered later. Although it managed to stay independent for sometime by trading with both Britain and France, and thereby dominating the area around the Great Lakes, in the mid-1700s, it came under great pressure as the British moved into the Ohio Valley, finally giving certain trading rights to the British, and reluctantly becoming their allies. By doing this, the Iroquois upset the balance of power between the French and Britain that had been so difficult to establish.
Why were Native Americans more likely to help the French than help the British? The French often traded with Native Americans, and unlike the British, were not interested in gaining land. Often, French trappers and fur traders would marry Native American women and follow their customs. The French had better relations with the Native Americans, and French missionaries traveled through the area, converting many Native Americans to Catholicism.
George Washington He was a 21-year-old planter and surveryor who was sent by Governor Robert Dinwiddie in 1753 to inform the French that they were trespassing on territory claimed by Great Britain, and to demand that they leave. A group of Virginians had plans for settling the Ohio Valley. He delivered the message, but to no avail. The French were not going to leave until they had taken possession of the Ohio. In the spring of 1754, Washington, now a lietenant colonel, was sent back to the Ohio by Dinwiddie with a militia of 150 mean. They had intructions to build a fort where the Allgheny and Monogahela Rivers meet to form the Ohio river (present-day Pittsburgh), but upon arriving, they found the French were already bulding Fort Duquesne. Washington and his crew then established a small post nearby called Fort Necessity. Washington attacked a French scouting party, and because they were outnumbered and inexperienced, they were forced to surrender. They were later released and returned to Virginia. Washington's attack marked the start of a series of clashes and full-scale war, and left him the hero who struck the first blow against the French, whose fame spread throughout the colonies and Europe.
militia It is a group of civilians trained to fight in emergencies. A militia of about 150 were with George Washington when he first attacked the French.
Albany Plan of Union It was a plan suggested by Benjamin Franklin that called for "one general government" for 11 of the American colonies. An elected legislature would govern these colonies and would have the power to collect taxes, raise troops, and regulate trade. Not one of the colonies approved the plan. They were not willing to give up any of their power. The Albany (New York) meeting (June 1754) failed to unite the colonists to fight the French. The Albany meeting had been called to find a way for the colonies to defend themselves against the French. They also hoped to persuade the Iroquois to take their side agaisnt the French.
What was the purpose of the Albany Plan of Union? It was to unite the colonies so they would be able to work together under one government to defeat the French. The elected legislature would have governed all the colonies, and would have the power to collect taxes, raise troops, and regulate trade, all of which would have helped the colonies defend themselves against the French.
