Term Definition
Connective tissues (General) cells secrete a matrix of protein fibers (collagen and/or elastin)
Areolar (loose) (connective) Cells: fibroblasts. Matrix:loose, irregular collagen and elastic network.Location/Function: found everywhere, universal packaging material, holds organs in place, holds tissues together
Adipose (loose) Cells: adipocytes each contains a large fat droplet) Matrix: small, irregular collagen Location/Function: fat tissue stores fat, insulates, padding
Reticular (loose) Cells:n/a Matrix: web like network of collagen house blood cells Location/Function: tissue in lymph nodes house White blood cells for body defense. Tissue in spleen filters out old/aging Red Blood Cells for recycling
Dense Regular Fibrous Cells:fibroblasts Matrix: dense parallel collagen fibers Location/Function: resistant to force in one direction, makes up tendons(attach. muscle to bone) and ligaments (bone to bone)
Dense Irregular Fibrous Cells:Fibroblasts Matrix: irregularly arranged collagen fibers Location/Function: resistant to force in multiple directions, found in areas stretched in multiple directions- skin, joint capsules
Hyaline Cartilage Cells: chondroblasts Matrix:hard, glassy Location/Function: covers joint surfaces, connects ribs to sternum, tracheal rings. Other types- Elastic (more elastin fibers, found in ears) and Fibrous (more collagen, found in intervertabral disks)
Bone Cells: osteoblasts Matrix: collagen mineralized w/ Ca, Mg, P Location/Function:cells are in lacuna (openings w/in matrix), cells are fed by fluid passing from blood vessels in the central canal through canaliculi, osteoclasts, breaks down bone tissue to reshape bones
Blood Cells: stem cells in red bone marrow divide into 1) erythrocytes(RBC's transport 02) 2) Leukocytes(WBC's-body defense) Matrix: plasma- the fibers are clotting proteins (fibrins) Location/Function: everywhere
Muscle (General) ability to contract, voluntary vs involuntary, found attached to bone, or in heart walls or lining hollow organs
Skeletal -striated-long, cylindrical cells with more than one nuclei, responsible for voluntary movement
Cardiac -striated-short cylindrical cells, branched, uninucleate cells, cells interconnect through intercalated disks which relay electrical impulses. Responsible for heart wall contractions
Smooth -non striated- short spindle, uninucleated cells, sheet forms walls of hollow organs, responsible for slow involuntary activities (digestive tract)
Nervous ectodermally derived nuerons support cells(glia) wich insulate and feed them, recieve stimuli, inte grate info send signals, brain spinal cord, all nerve bundles.
