| Term | Definition |
Cell Wall |
A rigid structure that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support to the cell. |
Ribosome |
A cell organelle composed of RNA and protein; the site of protein synthesis. |
Cell membrane |
The membrane enclosing the cytoplasm of a cell. |
Flagellum |
A long hairlike structure that grows out of a cell and enables the cell to move. |
Pili |
A hail or hairlike structure, especially on the surface of a cell or microorgansim. |
Mitochondrian |
Tiny organelles that transfer energy from organic molecules to ATP. |
Microfilaments |
Long threads of the beadlike protein actin and are linked end to end and wrapped around each other like two strands of a rope. |
Lysosome |
Vesicles that bud from the Golgi apparatus and that contain digestive enzymes. |
Golgi Apparatus |
Another system of flattened, membranous sacs. |
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) |
Lacks ribosomes and thus has a smooth appearance. |
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) |
A system of interconnected, flattened sacs covered with ribosomes. |
Nucleus |
Houses and protects the cells genetic information. |
Nuclear Envelop (membrane) |
The nucleus, surrounded by a double membrane |
Nucleolus |
The site where DNA is concentrated when it is in the process of making ribosomal RNA. |
Plasma Membrane |
Allows only certain molecules to enter or leave the cell. |
Centriole |
Consist of two short cylinders of microtubules at right angles of eachother and are situated in the cytoplasm near the nuclear envelope. |
Vesicle |
Small, spherically shaped sacs that are surrounded by a single membrane and that are classified by their contents. |
Cilia |
Hairlike structures that extend from the surface of the cell, where they assist in movement. |
Peroxisomes |
Are similiar to lysosomes which contain digestive enzymes, but they contain different enzymes and are not produced by the Golgi apparatus. |
Plastids |
An organelle of plant cells that conatains specific substances and performs specific functions for the cell; examples inculde chloroplasts and chromoplasts. |
Chloroplast |
An organele found in plant and algae cells where photosynthesis occurs. |
Chromoplast |
Plastids that contain colerful pigments and that may or may not take part in photosynthesis. |
Leucoplast |
A colerless plastid in the cytoplasm of plant cells around whih starch collects. |
Central Vacuole |
In some protists and in most plant cells, a large, fluid - filled organelle that stores water, and other materials. |
Tonoplast |
The cytoplsmic membrane that surrounds a vacuole of a plant cell. |
