Term Definition
What is pH scale? a scale used to measure how acidic or basic a liquid is
What is an acid? a solution that has an excess of H+ ions
What is base? a solution that has an excess of OH- ions
What is a neutral? a solution that has a pH of 7
What is pH actually a measure of? the number of H+ ions in a solution
What does a high and low pH indicate regarding number of H+ and OH-? A lot of H+ ions indicates low pH. a lot of OH- ions indicate that the number of H+ ions is very low, so the pH is high
What shape is a water molecule? a bent shape
What is a polar molecule? A molecule in which the charges are unevenly distributed
Describe hydrogen bonds? They are not as strong as covalent or ionic bonds
What is cohesion? an attraction between molecules of the same substance
What is adhesion? an attraction between molecules of different substances
What is a mixture? a material composed of two or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed together but not chemically combined
What is a suspension? a mixture of water and non dissolved material
What is a buffer? a weak acid or base that can react with strong acids or bases to prevent sharp, sudden changes in pH
What is a precipitate? solid materials formed
What percentage of the body is made up of water? 70-80%
What type of compound is H2O? a polar compound
What does water dissolve? ionic substances and other polar compounds such as sugar
What is responsible for the unique characteristics of water? hydrogen bonds
What are isotopes? atoms which have missing or extra neutrons
What happens to atomic mass of isotopes? the atomic masses are different but they still have the same element
What is radioactive decay? loss of neutrons over a specific amount of time
What isotope was used om external beam in radiotherapy? Cobalt 60
What is used in the detection of thyroid malfunction? Iodine 123
What is used in the treatment of Polycytheniavera (excessive production of red blood cells) Phosphorus 32
