ottava a sign that indicates that a note is to be played an octave higher if the sign is placed above the note or to be played an octave lower if the sign is placed below the note
double octave sign is used to indicate that the note or notes are to be played two octaves higher or lower than written
register the distance encompassed by each register that is one half step smaller than an octave
measure the staff space that occurs between two bar lines
bar line a single vertical line that divides musical material into measures
double bar line represented by a double vertical line, appears at the end of the composition or
tie a curved line that connects two or more adjacent notes of the same pitch
slur a curved line that connects two or more different notes in a musical phrase
phrase mark is a curved line that indicates a complete musical thought
fermata a symbol that indicate one of two things. 1. the notes or rest above or below the fermata will have a longer, indeterminate duration. 2. the conclusion of the phrase. in this case the final chord or note does not necessarly receive a longer duration
